Paul declares a complete revaluation: all his former advantages—the very assets he just enumerated—he now considers worthless compared to Christ.

Language and setting

The Greek term kerdia (loss, damage) suggests not merely neutral worthlessness but active harm. Paul is saying these credentials, which once seemed maximally valuable, now actively impede authentic faith. This reflects his conversion experience on the Damascus Road.

Significance

This marks the hinge-point of the passage: Paul moves from establishing credentials to dismantling them. It parallels his conversion narrative in Acts 9 and his theological treatment in Romans 3 and Galatians 3, where justification through faith replaces justification through works.

Read all of Philippians 3 — Paul's credentials were flawless — and he counted them as garbage. Forgetting what's behind, he strains toward the prize with everything he has.
