Because of this obedience unto death, God exalted Christ to the supreme position and granted him the name that transcends all other names—likely 'Lord' (Kyrios), the divine name itself.

Language and setting

The exaltation immediately follows humiliation; Paul employs the rhetorical figure of antithesis (tapeinōsis/hypsōsis). The 'name above all names' draws on the Jewish liturgical tradition wherein the divine name YHWH was revered as ineffable. Early Christians understood 'Lord' (Kyrios) as Christ's post-resurrection designation, a christological application of divine identity.

Significance

This completes the Christ-pattern's narrative arc: descent-exaltation, death-resurrection, shame-honor. It establishes Christ as the cosmos's rightful Lord, but only after complete voluntary renunciation of that claim.
