In the ancient world, just like today, ambition and pride were the default drivers. Paul is calling out the reality that most people act from self-interest. He's asking the Philippians to interrupt that pattern completely.

This is the complete reversal of how Adam and Eve thought in Genesis 3—they grasped for something they thought would make them more important. Here Paul tells you to let go of that grasping and trust God's care for you instead.

The scholarly reading

Paul prohibits two corrupting motives—selfish ambition (eritheia) and vainglory—and commands the countervailing posture: considering others as possessing greater worth than oneself.

Language and setting

Eritheia, originally meaning 'day labor for hire,' developed into a term for partisan self-interest and factional maneuvering. The Philippian context suggests status-consciousness (common in the Roman colonial hierarchy) was fueling division. Paul's antidote—humility (tapeinophrosynē)—was countercultural; Greco-Roman ethics valued megalopsychos, the magnanimous man, not the humble one.

This represents Christianity's radical revaluation of virtue. The synagogue tradition (Proverbs 15:33, Micah 6:8) honored humility, but Paul pushes further: actively elevating others' interests above one's own anticipated the incarnational logic he'll articulate in verses 6-8.
