The Philippians 'hold forth' (epechontes) the word of life—not merely possessing truth but actively presenting it, offering it to a dying world—so that Paul's apostolic labor will prove fruitful at the final judgment.

Language and setting

Logos tēs zōēs (word of life) is kerygmatic language—the gospel proclamation. Epechō literally means 'to hold forth, proffer, offer.' This is not passive possession but active witness. Paul's interest in their faithfulness extends to the eschaton ('day of Christ')—his boasting at the judgment depends on their perseverance.

Significance

Paul's apostolic mission is eschatologically vindicated through the faith of the communities he establishes. This recalls 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, where Paul's joy at Christ's coming depends on the Thessalonians' faithfulness—a pattern of mutual accountability in the body of Christ.
