So here's what you do with this: keep living out your salvation—keep growing and changing—with a deep awareness of how serious and precious this is. Do it whether I'm there watching or not.
Paul's in prison. He won't be able to oversee the Philippians in person for a while. He's calling them to maturity—not just behaving well when the pastor is watching, but because they genuinely believe what they believe.

This connects obedience to the Jesus story he just told. Jesus obeyed 'even to death on a cross'—not because anyone was forcing Him, but because it was right. That's the kind of commitment Paul is asking for.
Having presented Christ as the pattern, Paul calls the Philippians to the continuous work of outworking their salvation—not through anxiety but with reverent seriousness—whether Paul is present or absent.
Katergazesthe (work out, accomplish) suggests not earning salvation but its ongoing realization in concrete behavior. 'Fear and trembling' (phobos kai tromos) denotes not terror but the awe appropriate to God's presence. The note about Paul's absence acknowledges he cannot provide continual supervision; authentic Christianity must be internally motivated.

This bridges indicative and imperative: because you have been saved (past), work out that salvation (present). The pattern established by Christ—obedience, humility, service—becomes the template for the believers' ongoing moral transformation.
