A Voice in the Wilderness
As soon as Jesus was baptized, He went up out of the water. Suddenly the heavens were opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting on Him. Matthew 3:16 · Berean Standard Bible
As Jesus came up from the water, the heavens opened and the Spirit of God came down like a dove and rested on Him. Heaven itself responded to this moment.
This wasn't a private experience. The heavens split open visibly. The Spirit came down in a way people could see. God was making a public statement about His Son.
Matthew describes the divine response to Jesus's baptism.
This is one of the most sacred moments in all of Scripture: Father, Son, and Spirit together, launching the mission that will save the world.
The heavens 'opening' (eneochthesan) uses a passive verb suggesting divine action (a 'divine passive'). The Spirit descending 'like a dove' (hosei peristeran) may allude to Genesis 1:2, where the Spirit hovers over the waters of creation, signaling a new creation.
The opened heavens recall Ezekiel 1:1 and Isaiah 64:1, where heaven opens for divine revelation. This is a theophany, a visible manifestation of God.

The Trinity is revealed together: the Son in the water, the Spirit descending, the Father speaking. This is the inauguration of Jesus's messianic ministry.
