As evening comes, a wealthy man named Joseph from Arimathea arrives. He is a disciple of Jesus.
Joseph had been a secret follower of Jesus. Now, after the worst has happened, he steps out of hiding and publicly identifies with Jesus. Sometimes courage comes at the end, not the beginning.
The narrator introduces a new figure in the story — a secret disciple who becomes bold at the crucial moment.
When the public followers ran, a secret follower stepped forward. Joseph risks his reputation, his standing, and his safety to honor Jesus in death.
Joseph of Arimathea, described as a rich man (anthropos plousios) and a disciple of Jesus (ematheteuthei to Iesou), comes forward in the evening to claim the body.
Joseph's wealth fulfills Isaiah 53:9 ('He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death'). His courage in approaching Pilate as a secret disciple marks a decisive act of public faith.
