The scholarly reading

Jesus exhorts the disciples to 'watch and pray' (gregoreite kai proseuchesthe) to avoid entering temptation, acknowledging the spirit-flesh tension that Paul would later elaborate in Romans 7.

Language and setting

The spirit-willing/flesh-weak dichotomy is not Platonic dualism but reflects the Jewish understanding of the yetzer — the internal battle between righteous desire and creaturely limitation.

Voice

Jesus instructs the disciples with pastoral wisdom even in His own agony.

Significance

Even in His suffering, Jesus pastors His disciples, offering them the spiritual counsel they need for the testing that awaits them all.

42A second time He went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cup cannot pass unless I drink it, may Your will be done.”

43And again Jesus returned and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
