Jesus finishes all His teaching and turns to His disciples with what comes next — the hardest part of His mission.
This is a turning point in Matthew's Gospel. The time for parables and sermons is over; now the story moves toward the cross.
The narrator sets the stage, and Jesus speaks directly to His closest followers.
There is a weight to this moment. Everything Jesus has taught now gives way to everything He is about to endure.
Matthew signals a major literary transition with the formulaic phrase 'when Jesus had finished all these sayings' (panta tous logous toutous), marking the end of the fifth and final discourse.
This transitional formula appears five times in Matthew (7:28, 11:1, 13:53, 19:1, 26:1), structuring the Gospel around five major teaching blocks that parallel the Pentateuch.
The narrator introduces the shift from Jesus' teaching ministry to His Passion narrative.
