This is sobering. God isn't asking for perfection. He's asking you to try. Even the smallest effort would have been accepted. Doing nothing is the only unforgivable option.

The bar was so low. Just put it in the bank. Just do something. Anything. But doing absolutely nothing with what God gives you? That's the one thing He can't accept.

The scholarly reading

The master identifies the minimum acceptable action: depositing money with bankers (trapezitais) to earn interest (tokō). Even without entrepreneurial risk, passive interest would have produced some return. The servant failed to do even the bare minimum.

Language and setting

While rabbinic law debated the permissibility of charging interest (Deut 23:19-20), depositing with professional money-changers was generally accepted. The master points to the lowest possible bar of stewardship — and the servant missed even that.

Significance

The master points to the easiest possible option: put it in a bank. No risk, no effort, just minimal engagement. The servant couldn't even manage that.
