The scholarly reading

The one-talent servant approaches with a very different attitude. He begins with an accusation: 'I knew you are a hard man' (sklēros anthrōpos), reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter. His view of the master is distorted — he sees him as harsh, exploitative, and unreasonable.

Language and setting

The servant's characterization of the master as 'hard' (sklēros) reveals a fundamental relational failure. His theology (view of God) determined his behavior (burying the talent). A wrong view of God produces fear-based inaction.

The one-talent servant speaks with self-justifying defensiveness, blaming his inaction on the master's character.

Significance

The third servant reveals his heart: he sees the master as a cruel tyrant. His distorted image of the master is the root of his failure. He didn't know the master at all.
