The scholarly reading

Jesus' command to 'fill up the measure' (plērōsate to metron) of their fathers' sin is a prophetic pronouncement of inevitability. The imagery is of a cup of judgment being filled to the brim (cf. Gen 15:16; Dan 8:23). Their rejection and crucifixion of Jesus will complete what their ancestors began.

Language and setting

This verse anticipates the Passion narrative. Jesus knows these leaders will soon plot His death, thus completing the cycle of prophet-rejection and filling the measure of Israel's guilt.
