What It Means

Matthew 23:30, in plain English

The leaders say, 'If we had lived back then, we would never have killed the prophets like our ancestors did.' They're sure they're better than the people who came before them.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

The Pharisees claim moral distance from their ancestors: 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners (koinōnoi) in shedding the blood of the prophets.' This self-righteous claim actually condemns them, as Jesus will demonstrate.

Language and setting

Their denial ironically admits the historical fact of Israel's prophet-killing while simultaneously claiming exemption. Jesus will show this claim to be hollow.

Voice

Jesus quotes the Pharisees' own self-justifying words back to them, setting up His devastating reversal.

Significance

The Pharisees confidently claim they would never have persecuted the prophets like their ancestors did. But their actions toward Jesus prove otherwise.
