The scholarly reading

The sixth woe compares the Pharisees to 'whitewashed tombs' (taphois kekoniamenois). Before Passover, tombs were whitewashed with lime to make them visible so pilgrims could avoid ritual contamination. The whitewash made them appear beautiful (hōraioi) while concealing death and decay within.

Language and setting

Contact with a corpse or tomb caused seven days of ritual uncleanness (Num 19:16). The irony is devastating: the Pharisees are like graves that contaminate everyone who comes near them, despite their beautiful exterior.

Jesus delivers perhaps His most vivid and damning metaphor, comparing the Pharisees to decorated graves.
