Woe to the Hypocrites
Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let in those who wish to enter. Matthew 23:13 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus begins a series of powerful warnings, saying 'Woe to you!' to the religious leaders. They're shutting the door to God's kingdom in people's faces — not going in themselves and blocking others from entering.
A 'woe' is both a cry of sadness and a warning of judgment. Jesus isn't just angry; He's heartbroken over what these leaders are doing to people.
Jesus speaks like the prophets of old, pronouncing a solemn warning against those who misuse their spiritual authority.
Imagine leaders who are supposed to help people find God, but instead they're standing in the doorway blocking everyone from getting through. That's what breaks Jesus' heart here.
The first of seven 'woes' (ouai) — prophetic laments expressing grief and judgment. The Pharisees 'shut' (kleiete) the kingdom of heaven, preventing both their own entry and that of others. They have become gatekeepers who bar the gate.
The seven woes parallel the seven beatitudes of chapter 5, forming an antithetical structure: blessings for the humble versus woes for the hypocritical. The prophetic 'woe' form echoes Isaiah and Amos.
Jesus speaks with the authority of an Old Testament prophet, pronouncing covenant curses upon unfaithful leaders.
