No one could say a word in response. And from that day on, no one had the courage to ask Jesus any more trick questions. He had won every single debate.
This is the end of the testing. Every group that tried to trap Jesus has been completely outmatched. His wisdom is simply beyond anything they can handle.
Matthew records the stunned silence that followed, a silence that spoke louder than any words.
Picture the scene: a crowd of the most educated people in Israel, and not one of them can think of a single word to say. Jesus stands alone, undefeated.
The Pharisees are completely silenced. No one could answer (apekrithe) a word (logon), and from that day no one dared (etolmesen) to question Him further. Jesus has achieved total rhetorical victory.
This silence marks the end of public debate between Jesus and the religious authorities. What follows (ch. 23) are Jesus' denunciations, then the Olivet Discourse (ch. 24-25), and the Passion narrative (ch. 26-28).
The narrator records the Pharisees' complete inability to respond, closing this section of confrontations.
The debates are over. Jesus has silenced every opponent — Herodians, Sadducees, and Pharisees. No one will dare challenge Him publicly again.
