Jesus pushes further: if the Messiah is David's son, why did David himself, speaking by God's Spirit, call the Messiah 'Lord'? A father doesn't call his own descendant 'Lord.'
Jesus is pointing to something amazing. The Messiah isn't just a human king from David's family. He's someone so great that even King David looked up to Him.
Jesus challenges the Pharisees to think more deeply about what the Scriptures actually say about the Messiah.
This is Jesus pulling back the curtain. The Messiah is David's son, yes, but He's also David's Lord. That changes everything about who the Messiah really is.
Jesus introduces a problem: David, writing 'in the Spirit' (en pneumati) — that is, under divine inspiration — calls the Messiah 'Lord' (kyrios). In ancient Near Eastern patriarchal culture, a father never addresses his descendant as 'Lord.'
Jesus is about to cite Psalm 110:1, the most frequently quoted Old Testament passage in the New Testament. His argument hinges on David's prophetic authorship under the Holy Spirit.
Jesus responds to the Pharisees' answer with a follow-up question that probes the Messiah's divine identity.
Jesus tightens the snare. If the Messiah is merely David's descendant, why does David himself, speaking under God's inspiration, call Him 'Lord'?
41While the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus questioned them:
42“What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He?”
43Jesus said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’? For he says:
44‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand until I put Your enemies under Your feet.”’
45So if David calls Him ‘Lord,’ how can He be David’s son?”
