The King Enters
So they answered, “We do not know.” Matthew 21:27 · Berean Standard Bible
They answer, 'We don't know.' So Jesus says, 'Then I won't tell you by whose authority I do these things either.'
They chose not to answer honestly, so Jesus gives them back what they gave. Honesty earns honesty.
The leaders punt, and Jesus matches them move for move.
They tried to avoid the truth. So Jesus shows them that refusing to engage honestly means you don't get answers.
The leaders resort to 'We do not know' (ouk oidamen) — an evasion Jesus matches by withholding His own answer, exposing their intellectual cowardice.
Their 'we don't know' is not ignorance but refusal to commit; Jesus' matching refusal is not evasion but just consequence.
The leaders evade the question, and Jesus withholds His answer accordingly.
The exchange ends in a draw that is actually a defeat for the leaders: their evasion proves they operate in bad faith.
25What was the source of John’s baptism? Was it from heaven or from men?”
26But if we say, ‘From men,’ we are afraid of the people, for they all regard John as a prophet.”
27So they answered, “We do not know.”
28But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first one and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
29‘I will not,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went.
