What It Means

Matthew 2:8, in plain English

Herod told the wise men to find the child and report back so he could worship too. It was a lie. He had no intention of worshiping. He wanted to destroy.

Sometimes the most dangerous people are the ones who use religious language to cover their real motives. Herod's words sounded right, but his heart was murderous.

The scholarly reading

Herod's instruction to 'search carefully' (exetasate akribos) and report back uses diplomatic language masking his true intention of assassination. His claim that he too wishes to 'worship' (proskunesai) is deeply ironic.

Language and setting

Herod was a master manipulator who had navigated Roman politics for decades. His feigned piety was a calculated deception designed to use the Magi as scouts.
