The Cost of Following
Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” Matthew 19:21 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus says, 'If you want to be complete, sell what you have, give to the poor, and come follow Me. Your treasure will be in heaven.'
Jesus isn't giving a universal command to sell everything. He's identifying the one thing this man loves more than God.
Jesus looks at this man with love and names the one thing he's not willing to let go of.
Jesus puts His finger on the one attachment holding this man back. It's not about poverty — it's about what has your heart.
Jesus prescribes the radical cure: sell everything, give to the poor (gaining treasure in heaven), and follow Him — exposing wealth as the man's ultimate attachment superseding God.
The command to 'be perfect' (teleios) echoes Matthew 5:48 and means 'complete' or 'whole-hearted,' not sinless perfection.
Jesus issues a personal, targeted call to total surrender and discipleship.
Jesus identifies the one thing standing between the man and God: his possessions. The prescription is radical surgery on the idol of wealth.
