The Cost of Following

The man asks 'Which ones?' and Jesus starts listing: don't murder, don't commit adultery, don't steal, don't lie.
Jesus picks the commandments about how you treat other people — the ones that are easier to check off a list.
Jesus is naming specific commands, and the man is nodding along confidently.
So far, so good for the young man. He's kept all these. But Jesus isn't finished yet.
When the man asks which commandments, Jesus lists prohibitions from the second table of the Decalogue: murder, adultery, theft, and false witness — the horizontal, person-to-person duties.
Jesus selects commandments governing human relationships, setting up the climactic demand that will expose the man's idol.
Jesus answers the man's follow-up question by citing specific commandments from the Decalogue.
Jesus methodically lists the ethical commandments, building toward the one requirement the man cannot meet.
16Just then a man came up to Jesus and inquired, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to obtain eternal life?”
17“Why do you ask Me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
18“Which ones?” the man asked.
19honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.’”
20“All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?”
