Glory on the Mountain
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Matthew 17:9 · Berean Standard Bible
As they came down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone about what they saw until He had risen from the dead.
Some experiences with God are for a specific season. The Transfiguration would only make full sense after the resurrection. Timing matters with truth.
Jesus gives instructions as they leave the mountaintop experience.
The vision must be kept secret for now. Its full meaning awaits the resurrection. God reveals in stages.
Jesus commands silence (mēdeni eipēte to horama, 'tell no one the vision') until the Son of Man is raised from the dead. The term horama ('vision') categorizes the Transfiguration as a prophetic/apocalyptic experience.
The secrecy command connects to the broader messianic secret motif. The Transfiguration's meaning cannot be properly understood apart from the resurrection, which provides its interpretive key.
Jesus instructs the disciples as they descend the mountain.
Jesus again commands secrecy, but this time with a deadline: the resurrection. The Transfiguration will only make sense in light of the empty tomb.
7Then Jesus came over and touched them. “Get up,” He said. “Do not be afraid.”
8And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.
9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Do not tell anyone about this vision until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
10The disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
11Jesus replied, “Elijah does indeed come, and he will restore all things.
