The appearance of Mōysēs kai Ēlias ('Moses and Elijah') represents the Law and the Prophets, the two major divisions of the Hebrew Scriptures. Their conversation with Jesus confirms His fulfillment of both.

Language and setting

Moses and Elijah both experienced theophanies on mountains (Sinai/Horeb). Both had unusual departures from earth (Deuteronomy 34:5-6; 2 Kings 2:11). Their presence validates Jesus as the culmination of Israel's story.

4Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If You wish, I will put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

5While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”
