The father's report that the disciples ouk ēdynēthēsan ('could not') heal the boy creates a crisis of confidence. Having been given authority over demons (10:1), their failure is theologically significant.

The disciples' failure while Jesus was on the mountain of Transfiguration creates a dramatic parallel: divine glory above, human impotence below. This failure becomes a teaching moment about faith.

14When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus and knelt before Him.

16I brought him to Your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17“O unbelieving and perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to Me.”

18Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed from that moment.
