Matthew 16:3, in plain English

And a red sky in the morning means storms ahead. 'You can read the weather,' Jesus says, 'but you can't read the signs of the times.' Ouch.

The scholarly reading

The morning red sky predicts a storm (cheimōn). Jesus' conclusion sharply contrasts their meteorological skill with their inability to interpret ta sēmeia tōn kairōn ('the signs of the times'), using kairos in its theological sense of decisive, divinely appointed time.

Language and setting

The kairos (opportune/appointed time) is a key eschatological concept. Jesus implies that the messianic age is present in His ministry, but the leaders cannot recognize it.

Voice

Jesus continues and delivers His pointed rebuke.

Significance

Jesus exposes the absurdity of their request. They can forecast rain but cannot see that the kingdom of God is standing right in front of them.
