The scholarly reading

The paradox of sōsai ('save') and apolesei ('lose') operates on two levels of psychē (life/soul). Preserving one's physical life at the cost of faithfulness leads to ultimate loss; sacrificing earthly security for Christ's sake (heneken emou) leads to ultimate gain.

Language and setting

The word psychē encompasses both physical life and the inner self/soul. This deliberate ambiguity creates a layered teaching that addresses both martyrdom and daily self-denial.
