Jesus tells Peter that He will build His church on this rock, and not even the gates of hell will be able to stand against it. The church is built to last.

The scholarly reading

The wordplay Petros/petra ('Peter/rock') is central to ecclesiology. Jesus declares epi tautē tē petra oikodomēsō mou tēn ekklēsian ('on this rock I will build My church'), and the pylai hadou ('gates of Hades') will not overpower (katischysousin) it.

Language and setting

Ekklēsia appears only here and in 18:17 in the Gospels. Whether 'this rock' refers to Peter himself, his confession, or Christ is one of the most debated questions in biblical interpretation.

Significance

Jesus makes an extraordinary promise: on the foundation of this confession (and this confessor), He will build something that not even death itself can destroy.

20Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.
