Matthew 15:32

Clean and Unclean

Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.” Matthew 15:32 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Matthew 15:32, in plain English

Jesus calls His disciples over and says His heart aches for the crowd. They've been with Him three days with nothing to eat. He refuses to send them away hungry.

Why it's here

Jesus notices your physical needs, not just your spiritual ones. He cares about your hunger, your exhaustion, your everyday struggles.

Who's speaking

Jesus speaks to His disciples about His compassion for the crowd.

Where it sits in the story

Once again, Jesus' compassion drives Him to act. He sees the whole person: body, soul, and spirit. And He provides for all of it.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Jesus' statement splanchnizomai epi ton ochlon ('I have compassion for this crowd') uses the same visceral compassion verb as 14:14. The detail of three days (hēmerai treis) without food establishes the severity of the situation.

Language and setting

This second feeding narrative parallels the first (14:13-21) with significant differences: the number of provisions, baskets, and people differ. The compassion motif again drives divine action.

Voice

Jesus speaks to His disciples, expressing compassion for the crowd.

Significance

Jesus initiates the second feeding miracle out of compassion. Unlike the first, where the disciples raised the concern, here Jesus sees the need first.

In context

Matthew 15:30–34

30Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and laid them at His feet, and He healed them.

31The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they glorified the God of Israel.

32Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I have compassion for this crowd, because they have already been with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may faint along the way.”

33The disciples replied, “Where in this desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”

34“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.

Read all of Matthew 15 — Jesus dismantles the purity codes the Pharisees have built and shows that what defiles a person comes from within, not without.
