The scholarly reading

Jesus' metaphor of children's bread (arton tōn teknōn) and kynariois (little dogs/household pets) distinguishes between Israel (children) and Gentiles (dogs). While 'dog' was a common Jewish epithet for Gentiles, the diminutive form softens it slightly.

Language and setting

The use of kynariois (diminutive 'puppies/household dogs') rather than kynes ('dogs/street dogs') is significant. It suggests domestic pets who do receive food, albeit after the children, leaving an opening for the woman.

Jesus responds with a metaphorical saying that appears to deny her request.

Significance

Jesus uses a parable that seems to exclude the woman. But the very imagery He chooses contains a hidden door of hope that she will brilliantly find.
