Jesus reveals the connection between the heart, speech, and true purity.
Jesus gets to the root of the matter: it's not about what goes in but what comes out. And what comes out starts in the heart.
The key principle: ta ekporeuomena ek tou stomatos ek tēs kardias exerchetai ('what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart'). The kardia (heart) in Jewish anthropology is the command center of thought, will, and moral decision-making.
This verse establishes the heart as the source of both speech and moral character. It aligns with Proverbs 4:23 ('Guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life').
Jesus identifies the heart as the true source of defilement.
Jesus locates the problem not in what we consume but in what we harbor. The heart is the wellspring of everything that truly defiles.
16“Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.
17“Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
18But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these things defile a man.
19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander.
20These are what defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile him.”
