This declaration radically redefines koinoō (defilement/ritual impurity). By locating defilement in what exits the mouth (speech, which originates from the heart) rather than what enters it (food), Jesus overturns the purity system's dietary framework.

Language and setting

This teaching has enormous implications for the Torah's food laws (Leviticus 11). While Matthew does not draw out this conclusion as explicitly as Mark (7:19), the principle is revolutionary.
