They say: is this not the carpenter's son? Is His mother not Mary? Are not His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? How can He be anything special?
The people who knew Jesus as a kid cannot see Him as anything more. They reduce Him to His family background and miss the extraordinary person standing right in front of them.
The people of Nazareth speak skeptically.
The hometown crowd cannot see past the boy they watched grow up. They know His family, His father's trade, His brothers' names -- and they think that is all there is to know. They are profoundly wrong.
The townspeople identify Jesus by His earthly relationships: the carpenter's son (ho tou tektonos huios), Mary's son, and brother of James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas, using His ordinary background to discredit His extraordinary authority.
The term tekton (carpenter/craftsman) placed Jesus in the artisan class -- respectable but not elite. Naming His mother and brothers served to reduce Him to an ordinary local family, undermining any claims to special authority.
The Nazareth townspeople voice their skepticism.
The Nazarenes catalog Jesus' ordinary credentials -- His father's trade, His mother's name, His brothers -- as evidence that He cannot possibly be anything special, embodying the classic prophetic rejection by one's own.
53When Jesus had finished these parables, He withdrew from that place.
54Coming to His hometown, He taught the people in their synagogue, and they were astonished. “Where did this man get such wisdom and miraculous powers?” they asked.
55“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t His mother’s name Mary, and aren’t His brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas?
56Aren’t all His sisters with us as well? Where then did this man get all these things?”
57And they took offense at Him.
