Secrets of the Kingdom
He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. Matthew 13:11 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus tells them: you have been given the privilege of understanding the secrets of God's kingdom, but not everyone has that gift.
Jesus is saying that spiritual understanding is a gift, not just an intellectual achievement. The disciples have it because they are open to it.
Jesus answers His disciples.
Jesus explains that understanding His parables is a gift from God. It comes to those who are genuinely seeking truth with open hearts.
Jesus explains that the 'knowledge of the mysteries' (ta mysteria) of the kingdom has been given (dedotai) to the disciples but not to the crowds, establishing a distinction between divinely-granted and withheld understanding.
The term mysteria does not mean esoteric secrets but rather divine truths now being revealed to those prepared to receive them. This echoes 11:25-26, where the Father reveals truth to 'infants' rather than the 'wise.'
Jesus explains His parable methodology to the disciples.
Jesus reveals that His parabolic teaching is not arbitrary but reflects a divine economy of revelation: some are granted understanding of the kingdom's mysteries while others are not.
9He who has ears, let him hear.”
10Then the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Why do You speak to the people in parables?”
11He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them.
12Whoever has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
13This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand.’
