Jesus responds with a simple question: if one of your sheep fell into a pit on the Sabbath, would you not pull it out? Of course you would.

The scholarly reading

Jesus uses a qal vahomer (lesser to greater) argument: if rescuing a sheep (probaton) from a pit on the Sabbath is universally accepted, then healing a human being is certainly permissible.

Language and setting

While some strict Pharisaic traditions debated even rescuing an animal on the Sabbath (cf. Dead Sea Scrolls, CD 11:13-14), the more common view permitted it. Jesus appeals to common sense compassion.

Jesus responds to the Pharisees' trap with a counter-question.

Significance

Jesus disarms the trap with practical wisdom: everyone would rescue their own sheep on the Sabbath without thinking twice, exposing the hypocrisy of refusing to help a human being.
