The scholarly reading

Jesus establishes a chain of representation (dechomenos): receiving the disciples is equivalent to receiving Jesus Himself, which in turn is equivalent to receiving the Father who sent Him.

Language and setting

This reflects the Jewish legal principle of shaliach (agent), where an authorized representative carries the full authority of the sender. It elevates the disciples' status as Christ's ambassadors.
