What It Means

Matthew 10:37, in plain English

Jesus says that if you love your parents or your children more than you love Him, you are not truly ready to be His follower. He asks for first place in your heart.

The scholarly reading

Jesus demands supreme allegiance: love (philon) for father, mother, son, or daughter that exceeds love for Him renders one 'not worthy' (ouk estin mou axios) of discipleship.

Language and setting

This radical demand echoes Deuteronomy's call to love God above all else. In the ancient honor-shame culture, placing any figure above one's parents was deeply countercultural.

Jesus addresses the Twelve with an absolute claim on their loyalty.

Significance

Jesus makes His most demanding statement yet: no human relationship, no matter how sacred, can take priority over allegiance to Him. He claims a loyalty that surpasses even family bonds.
