But if you deny knowing Jesus before others, He warns that He will also deny you before His Father. Your choices about loyalty carry eternal weight.
This is the serious flip side of the previous promise. Jesus is being honest about what is at stake when you choose to distance yourself from Him.
Jesus speaks directly to His twelve disciples.
Jesus does not sugarcoat the cost of discipleship. He pairs a beautiful promise with a sobering warning, making clear that your relationship with Him is a matter of ultimate importance.
The converse of the confession logion: denial (arnesetai) of Jesus before people results in Jesus' denial of that person before the heavenly Father, establishing the gravity of apostasy.
This warning balances the promise of verse 32, creating a solemn pair that underscores the ultimate consequences of one's public stance toward Jesus.
Jesus continues speaking to the Twelve in His commissioning discourse.
Jesus presents the sobering reverse of His promise: just as confession leads to heavenly advocacy, denial of allegiance leads to heavenly disavowal, underscoring the weight of faithfulness.
31So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
