Sent Out Like Sheep

Jesus asks you to consider something amazing: even a tiny sparrow, worth almost nothing at the market, never falls to the ground without your Heavenly Father knowing.
Jesus is building a case for why you do not need to be afraid. If God pays attention to the smallest birds, how much more does He watch over you?
Jesus is speaking to His twelve disciples during their commissioning.
Jesus uses a simple, beautiful image from daily life to calm His followers' fears. If God notices every sparrow, you can trust He notices you too.
Jesus uses the sparrow (strouthion), sold for an assarion (a Roman copper coin of minimal value), to illustrate God's comprehensive providence -- not one falls apart from the Father's will.
This argument from lesser to greater (qal vahomer) was a common rabbinic reasoning technique. If God attends to creatures of negligible market value, His care for human beings is assured.

Building on His call to fearlessness, Jesus draws from everyday marketplace imagery to demonstrate that God's sovereign attention extends to the smallest and most insignificant creatures.
