The scholarly reading

The name Iesous (Jesus) is the Greek form of the Hebrew Yeshua, meaning 'Yahweh saves.' The angel explicitly connects the name to His mission: soteriological deliverance from sin (hamartion), not political liberation from Rome.

Language and setting

First-century Jews expected a political messiah. The angel's description of Jesus's mission as saving 'from sins' rather than 'from enemies' was a radical redefinition of messianic expectation.

23“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
