Matthew 1:18, in plain English

Mary and Joseph were engaged when she became pregnant, not by Joseph, but by the Holy Spirit. You can only imagine how confusing and frightening that must have been for both of them.

Why it's here

Being pregnant before the wedding wasn't just embarrassing; it was dangerous. Mary could have been publicly disgraced or worse.

The scholarly reading

The birth narrative begins with genesis (origin/birth) of Jesus. Mary's pregnancy ek pneumatos hagiou (from the Holy Spirit) during the betrothal period (erusin) would have been deeply scandalous, as betrothal was legally binding in Jewish law.

Language and setting

Jewish betrothal (erusin) lasted about a year before the wedding (nisuin). During this period, unfaithfulness was treated as adultery, punishable by death (Deuteronomy 22:23-24).
