God didn't say 'listen to Moses' or 'listen to Elijah.' He said, 'Listen to Him' — listen to Jesus, especially the hard things He's been saying about the cross.

Where it sits in the story

This is the moment that silenced every question. God's own voice thundered from the cloud with one simple, powerful instruction: when Jesus speaks, listen. Even when it's hard to hear.

The scholarly reading

The cloud (nephele) represents the Shekinah glory — God's manifest presence (cf. Exodus 40:34). The divine voice echoes the baptism (Mark 1:11) but adds the imperative 'Listen to Him!' (akouete autou), alluding to Deuteronomy 18:15.

Language and setting

The command to 'listen to Him' effectively subordinates Moses and Elijah to Jesus and validates Jesus' Passion predictions that Peter had resisted.

Significance

The cloud of God's presence descends and a divine voice corrects Peter's error: Jesus is not one teacher among three. He is the beloved Son — the one they must listen to, especially when He speaks of suffering.
