Coming Down the Mountain
Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters —one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Mark 9:5 · Berean Standard Bible
Peter blurted out, 'Rabbi, this is amazing! Let's build three shelters — one for You, one for Moses, one for Elijah.' He wanted to hold onto the moment.
Peter's impulse was to freeze-frame the experience. But mountain-top moments aren't meant to be permanent — they're meant to prepare you for what comes next.
Peter speaks up, overwhelmed by what he's seeing.
Classic Peter — experiencing something beyond comprehension and immediately wanting to organize it. His heart was in the right place, but he was missing the bigger picture.
Peter's suggestion to build three 'shelters' (skenas) may reflect the Feast of Tabernacles tradition or an attempt to prolong and institutionalize the theophanic experience. Addressing Jesus as 'Rabbi' rather than 'Christ' may indicate a regression.
The proposal to build three equal shelters subtly elevates Moses and Elijah to Jesus' level — an error the heavenly voice will immediately correct.
