The scholarly reading

Even the smallest act of kindness — a cup of water (potērion hydatos) — done 'because you bear the name of Christ' (en onomati hoti Christou este) carries eternal reward. The promise 'will never lose his reward' (ou mē apolesē) is emphatic.

Language and setting

This saying connects to the theme of receiving 'little ones' (v.37) and extends the principle of kingdom reward to the most modest acts of service.

43If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two hands and go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.
