Jesus said, 'Whoever welcomes a child like this in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes the One who sent Me.' Serving the smallest is serving God Himself.

The scholarly reading

Jesus establishes a chain of representation: welcoming a child 'in My name' equals welcoming Christ, which equals welcoming the Father. The shaliach principle (Jewish agency law) underlies this identification.

Language and setting

The phrase 'in My name' (epi tō onomati mou) indicates that the child is received because of one's relationship with Christ, not because of the child's own merit or status.
