Compared to Peter's bold rebuke after the first prediction (8:32), the disciples now retreat into confused silence, representing a different but equally inadequate response to the Passion theology.

31because He was teaching His disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”

32But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.

33Then they came to Capernaum. While Jesus was in the house, He asked them, “What were you discussing on the way?”

34But they were silent, for on the way they had been arguing about which of them was the greatest.
