The scholarly reading

Jesus takes the boy by the hand (kratesas tes cheiros) and raises him (egeiren) — the same vocabulary Mark uses for resurrection (cf. 5:41, 16:6), creating a deliberate parallel between healing and rising from death.

Language and setting

The verbs krateo and egeiro connect this scene to Jairus's daughter's raising and ultimately to Jesus' own resurrection, embedding healing within a larger resurrection framework.

Mark narrates Jesus' final act of restoration.

Significance

Jesus reaches down, takes the boy's hand, and lifts him up — alive. The scene is a miniature resurrection: from apparent death to standing life, accomplished by the touch and power of Christ.

25When Jesus saw that a crowd had come running, He rebuked the unclean spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit,” He said, “I command you to come out and never enter him again.”

26After shrieking and convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.”

27But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him to his feet, and he stood up.

28After Jesus had gone into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29Jesus answered, “This kind cannot come out, except by prayer.”
