The spirit's violent manifestations — convulsions, foaming, teeth-grinding, rigidity — are described with clinical precision. The disciples' inability (ouk ischysan) to expel it raises questions about the nature and degree of demonic power.

Language and setting

The failed exorcism by the disciples contrasts with their earlier success (Mark 6:13), suggesting that spiritual authority requires ongoing dependence rather than assumed competence.

The father continues his description of the symptoms and reports the disciples' failure.
