As soon as the crowd saw Jesus, they were filled with awe and ran to greet Him. There was something about His presence that drew people in.
Even in the middle of chaos, Jesus' arrival changed the atmosphere. His presence brought hope where there had been confusion.
Mark describes the crowd's instinctive reaction.
Something about Jesus in that moment stopped everyone in their tracks. The arguing stopped, the confusion paused, and everyone ran toward the one person who could actually help.
The crowd's awe (exethambethēsan) upon seeing Jesus may reflect a residual radiance from the Transfiguration, or simply their surprise at His timely arrival during the dispute.
The verb exethambethēsan indicates strong emotional response — possibly awe mixed with surprise — a reaction Mark reserves for encounters with divine power.
