Peter's confession 'You are the Christ' (sy ei ho Christos) is the theological climax of Mark's first half. The emphatic 'you' (sy) personalizes the confession against all other candidates.

Unlike Matthew's account, Mark records no beatitude for Peter, maintaining his emphasis on the difficulty and costliness of true messianic understanding.

Significance

When Jesus turns the question from 'people' to 'you,' Peter breaks through with the confession that anchors the entire Gospel: 'You are the Christ.' It is both revelation and turning point.
