Who Do You Say I Am?

The disciples had forgotten to bring bread and only had one loaf in the boat. You can almost picture them nervously realizing their mistake.
They're sitting next to the man who just fed four thousand, and they're worried about lunch. Sometimes we do the same thing — forgetting what God has already proven.
Mark shares this small but telling detail.
One loaf. Twelve disciples. And the one Person who could multiply it beyond imagination sitting right there. But they couldn't see past their empty stomachs.
The disciples' forgetfulness about bread (one loaf for thirteen people) sets up the teaching on spiritual blindness. The 'one loaf' (hena arton) may symbolically represent Jesus Himself as the sufficient provision.
This detail creates dramatic irony: the disciples worry about bread in the presence of the One who has twice fed thousands.
Mark provides narrative exposition about the disciples' oversight.
